When the island of São Miguel was first settled, at the beginning of the 16th century, two young nuns, believers in Christ, who were living in a chapel in Santa Clara, decided to build a convent and serve God there. They took an image of the Holy Christ to the monastery, which became a place of many visitors, attracted by its faith, worship and virtue. Years later, Mother Teresa da Anunciada, a very devout nun, was awakened to the miraculous nature of the image of the Holy Christ.
