John the Baptist, son of Zechariah and Saint Elizabeth, cousin of Mary - mother of Jesus, was a precursor of Christ. He announced his coming and the salvation that the Messiah would bring to all men.

Saint John, also a prophet, preached and performed sacrifices by the River Jordan, calling men to penance and baptism as a form of purification.

His birthday is celebrated on June 24th.
