 José Tomás de Sousa Martins, born in Vila Franca de Xira on March 7, 1843, was a doctor and professor, considered by the people as a saintly person, who provided medical care and charity to the most disadvantaged.

Dr. Sousa Martins was a very intelligent man, dedicated to his profession, influencing everyone around him and playing an important role in the fight against tuberculosis.
He died at the age of 54 from tuberculosis.
