St. Martin de Porres Magnet

Saint Martin de Porres was born in Peru in 1579. He was the illegitimate son of Juan de Porres, a Spanish nobleman who only recognized him later, and of Ana Velásquez, a black slave who had been freed by her owner.

Saint Martin became an apprentice to Mateo Pastor, who was a surgeon, dentist and barber, where he learned the rudiments of medicine, which would later be useful to him in the convent.

At the age of 15, he dedicated himself to religious life, entering a convent in a position almost like a slave. He committed himself to serving the people for the rest of his life. In the convent, he was in charge of the infirmary, helping everyone who came to him, he swept the entire convent, took care of the clothes, was the barber, and the bell ringer.

Saint Martin de Porres was marginalized during his life for being mixed race, but he did not allow prejudice and racism to prevent him from becoming a saint.
