Cross of Saint Anthony

Saint Anthony of Lisbon, also known as Saint Anthony of Padua, was born in Lisbon between 1191 and 1195 and died in Padua on June 13, 1231.

Baptized as Fernando (de Bulhões), he began his studies in Coimbra, where he deepened his religious erudition.

He became a Franciscan in 1220 and traveled extensively.

In Padua, Italy, he demonstrated his gift in the practice of sermons, which became greatly admired, being considered eloquent, persuasive texts, full of zeal.

His reputation for holiness led to his being canonized by the Catholic Church shortly after his death.

His great knowledge made him one of the most respected figures in the Catholic Church of his time. Saint Anthony is the patron saint of the city of Lisbon and also the patron saint of the Italian city of Padua.

He is considered the patron saint of amputees, animals, the sterile, boatmen, the elderly, pregnant women, fishermen, farmers, travelers and sailors; of horses and donkeys; of the poor and the oppressed; he is invoked to find lost things, to conceive children, to avoid shipwrecks and to obtain marriage. He is celebrated with great festivities in various parts of the world, on June 13th.
